What to expect: your genetic counselling journey

A supportive, simple process designed around you.

Step 1: The First Chat

Everything starts with a simple conversation. We sit down together to talk about your goals, personal medical history, and family history. There’s no pressure here; we’re just figuring out if genetic testing is actually the right move for you.

Step 2: Simple, Secure Testing

If we decide to go ahead, the testing is easy. It’s just a saliva collection or a quick blood draw. We handle all the coordination and shipping to you so you don’t have to worry about the logistics or the paperwork.

Step 3: Making Sense of the Science

Once the lab completes testing and we receive your results, we don’t just hand over a raw computer report. We spend time reviewing and interpreting the findings through a clinical lens to ensure we can clearly explain exactly what the data means for your specific life and family.

Step 4: Your Results Session

We meet again to go over everything in plain language. You’ll leave the session with a clear understanding of your diagnosis or genetic risks and, more importantly, a practical plan for what to do next for your health.

is healica a good fit for me?

A quick checklist to help you see how genetic counselling can support you.

  • I am experiencing unexplained symptoms or health features that may have a genetic cause (diagnostic testing).
  • I’m planning a family and want to give my kids the best start possible (family planning and pregnancy).
  • I want to be proactive and find out about potential health risks before they happen (proactive health screening).
  • My medications feel “off” and I want to see if my DNA is affecting how they work (medication guidance).
  • Health issues run in my family (like cancer, heart disease, or connective tissue disorders) and I want to understand my risk (hereditary cancer screening).

Common questions & Privacy

Everything you need to know about our process and your privacy.

Is my genetic information actually kept private?

Your privacy is our top priority. We follow the same strict confidentiality rules used in hospitals. Your DNA data is never sold, never shared with insurance companies, and never given to employers. You own your information; we’re just here to help you understand it.

For more information on legal protections, read the Genetic Non-Discrimination Act Fact Sheet

Do I need a doctor’s note to book an appointment?

Not at all. While we often work alongside family doctors, you can book with us directly. We believe you should have direct access to your own health information without having to jump through extra hoops.

What if the results are upsetting or confusing?

This is exactly why we do this together. Unlike at-home kits that just mail you a confusing report and leave you on your own, we are here to walk you through both the emotional and the clinical side of the results. We turn the information into a positive health strategy so you aren’t left feeling overwhelmed.

How do I know if this is right for me?

If you have questions about your family history, your medications, unexplained symptoms, or you just want to be proactive about your future health, we should talk. We’re here to turn “I’m not sure” into “Now I know.”

What is the cost of genetic testing?

The cost of genetic testing varies widely by indication, but generally starts at about $350, and is separate from the genetic counselling fee quoted under SERVICES. Payment for the genetic testing is made directly to the laboratory.
